The McGee House: Tradition Meets Modernity
Originally designed in 1955, this mid-century modern home has a rich history. Here, the architects were tasked with both maintaining the original allure of the home and updating it to modern tastes. They did so in part by using the ultra-soft, matte Olon Cashmere Dusk, creating an artful yet sleek space.
The McGee House is a beautiful example of unassuming post and beam architecture set in a private forested corner of West Vancouver. The owners love how it feels to live in a house that is conceived primarily as an instrument for viewing and experiencing the landscape. It is modernism at its best.

The task was to renovate the interior: refurbish, freshen and add to an already well-considered series of spaces without undoing any of the classic mid-century charm. It was a delicate tight rope to walk.
New materials and finishes were researched and tested at length, as they needed to be simple and complementary to showcase the rich textures of the original interior. Replanning the kitchen, bathrooms, and bedrooms to align with the owner's lifestyle was an exercise in balancing the strict geometry and modularity of the house against the practical needs and intended uses of the spaces.
