Hardwood Plywood is defined by the types of slicing, matching, and grade of the wood product. Rotary Sliced White Maple is a highly desirable product utilized in cabinetry, millwork and furniture for its beautiful woodgrain and durability. This hardwood plywood is offered pre-finished with a clear protective coating. Saving the woodworker time and effort, this coating seals the wood and prevents damage.

Rotary Sliced:

Rotary Sliced veneer is peeled from a whole log set in a lathe and turned against a special knife, resulting in a cut that roughly parallels the growth rings to produce a bold and often striated grain pattern. Like unwinding a roll of paper, the ribbon of veneer is then cut to usable widths. Rotary Slice creates exceptionally wide sheets with distinctive grain patterns. Rotary cutting is the only method of producing veneer that creates Whole Piece Faces. This is generally the most economical way to create veneer and is the most common cut for maple.

Whole Piece Face Match:

WPF Matching is a continuous piece of veneer peeled from a log using the Rotary Slicing method. The result is a single sheet of veneer that reveals a continuous grain pattern throughout the sheet. WPF is often desired for Maple, as it displays the natural grain character of the wood species.

Why Prefinished WPF White Maple?

  • Prefinished, lacquered veneer
  • Light, white surface appearance
  • Machines well
  • Evenly textured, straight grain
  • Abundant and readily available
  • Ideal for cabinetry and furniture

Hardwood Plywood products are made from beautiful hardwood, designed to showcase the stunning figure and allure of wood. Often stained or finished, these thin sheets are assembled using an engineered coreā€”from veneer core, particleboard, to medium density fiberboard.

Specifications

Contact your Sales or Specifications Representative for further information on specific color and character varieties available and best suited for your project.

White Maple Color Grade:

Like Hard Maple, Maple Veneer is graded according to its color. White Maple Hardwood Plywood is color graded to solely consist of the brilliant white sapwood of the Maple log. The reddish-brown heartwood is absent in this color grade. White Maple is pure and delicate, often found in high-end millwork projects and beautiful cabinetry.

C Grade Plywood:

The grading standard for Hardwood plywood comes from the Hardwood Plywood and Veneer Association (HPVA). C Grade Plywood allows for increased natural characteristics. Pin knots, small burls, solid and repaired knots are allowed. However, a smooth and sound finish is ensured. C Grade Maple is ideal for applications where a more economical panel with natural characteristics is desired.

Grading Hardwood Plywood is inherently a subjective and difficult process, as although the standard gives rules for specific numbers of defects, there is always personal or operational bias when it comes to the overall appearance of a particular surface. From one grade to the next, not only does variation in appearance get wider, but the amount of overlap between the low end of one grade and the higher end of the next grade down gets wider as well. Because of the inherent individuality of each tree and species, consideration should be given to the overall appearance of the veneer face to determine the appropriate grade for that veneer.

Please consult with your Sales or Specifications Representative, as we can help you determine what is acceptable to you for color, flitch size, size and amount of pin knots, rough grain or other defects in order to get you the product that works best for your applications.

Sustainability:

Hard Maple is primarily harvested in the Northeastern regions of North America. In the United States, Hard Maple is the fifth most abundant hardwood species, representing 7% of standing hardwood timber. Harvest rates versus growth rates based on data from the US Forest Service census show that 46% more Hard Maple is growing annually than is being harvested. Hard Maple is a sustainably harvested domestic lumber.

We recognize the importance of ethically harvested lumber. As our most valuable resource, sustainably harvested forests increase the rate of carbon sequestration and significantly cut carbon emissions. Wood is a renewable and sustainable material for the built environment, requiring less energy than alternatives like concrete or steel. From harvesting to recycling, lumber is the most carbon-efficient choice for building materials. Wood is of the few elements that can increase sustainability in a buildingā€™s life cycle, reduce waste, and create positive biophilic health benefits. Increasingly, architects and designers are calling for a return to wood as the prominent basic building material.

As an early adopter of FSCĀ®, we recognize the importance of sustainably harvested lumber. FSCĀ® Certified lumber is available upon request. Contact your Sales or Specifications Representative for more information.
