Plain Sawn Lumber:
Cutting tangentially through the tree’s growth rings, Plain Sawn Walnut utilizes the entire log while minimizing waste. The result is a grain pattern that displays a very traditional and recognizable cathedral pattern.
Lumber is a living product, responding to its environment as a tree does to its forest. Humidity, age, area and cut will slightly alter the appearance of the lumber product. The product images on this page are a sample of this species, not an exact depiction of the product you will receive.

Specifications
Prime Veneer Grade Lumber:
As a result of the natural knotty quality of Walnut, the National Hardwood Lumber Association (NHLA) grade rules make accommodating compromises. Veneer Grade Walnut was specifically developed with our supply partners to address the special needs and requirements of Walnut boards. We are proud to offer a product that includes a percentage of veneer logs in the sawing process which elevates both the percentage of clear boards as well as the minimum color level.
Prime Veneer Grade boards are designed to meet a minimum yield of 83 ⅓ % (10/12ths) clear-wood cuttings on the best face. Allowed widths start at 6” and wider before kiln drying with lengths 7’ and longer.
Please consult with your Sales or Specifications Representative to guarantee you receive the product that best meets your requirements.
Color/Appearance:
Walnut, often called Black or American Walnut, is easily identified by its creamy white sapwood contrasted against a chocolatey brown heartwood. The wood will often have darker streaks of subtle grey or purple colors that can evolve and strengthen over time. Walnut typically has a straight grain with medium texture and average luster. Walnut is commonly steamed to darken the sapwood and deepen the heartwood. Walnut continues to be the classic and elegant choice for American woodworkers and designers with its luxurious mix of sapwood and heartwood.
Contact your Sales or Specifications Representative for further information on specific color and character varieties available and best suited for your project.
Workability:
Walnut is an exceptionally workable hardwood lumber. It glues, stains and finishes well, although the natural finish is often the desired result. Shrinkage and swelling are minimized on account of its dimensional stability and hardness. Walnut is also highly durable and impact resistant.
Sustainability:
American Black Walnut trees are native to North America and are dispersed throughout the Eastern half of the continent with the largest concentration found in Ohio and Missouri. Representing only 1% of all standing hardwood timber, Walnut is the least available hardwood. Harvest rates versus growth rates based on US Forest Service census numbers show that 60% more Walnut is growing annually than is being harvested. Walnut is considered sustainable although not as common as many other woods.
We recognize the importance of ethically harvested lumber. As our most valuable resource, sustainably harvested forests increase the rate of carbon sequestration and significantly cut carbon emissions. Wood is a renewable and sustainable material for the built environment, requiring less energy than alternatives like concrete or steel. From harvesting to recycling, lumber is the most carbon-efficient choice for building materials. Wood is of the few elements that can increase sustainability in a building’s life cycle, reduce waste, and create positive biophilic health benefits. Increasingly, architects and designers are calling for a return to wood as the prominent basic building material.
As an early adopter of FSC®, we recognize the importance of sustainably harvested lumber. FSC® Certified lumber is available upon request. Contact your Sales or Specifications Representative for more information.
