Hardwood Plywood is defined by the types of slicing, matching, and grade of the wood product. With various methods of slicing and matching, veneers can be customized to each wood species and project, resulting in multiple exceptional options to make any project uniquely artful.
Quarter Slice:
Quarter Slicing occurs when a log is cut at a right angle to the growth rings and parallel to the rays, resulting in a relatively straight grain veneer. This slice creates a uniform display of grain across the face that is both dimensionally stable and visually appealing. The vividly lustrous heartwood of AA Grade Walnut lends itself well to Quarter Slicing, creating an immaculately clear and captivating straight grain that will elevate any space.
Book Matched:
Walnut comes Book Matched, a method in which every other leaf or component of veneer from a log is turned over to produce its mirror image at the joint. Like turning the pages of a book, this matching method produces an aesthetically pleasing appearance across the face.
Why AA Grade Walnut?
- Superior grade for unparalleled visual and structural quality
- Highly durable, dimensionally stable and strong
- Takes finishing and staining with ease
- Effortlessly workable
- Timelessly beautiful appearance

AA Grade Plywood:
The grading standard for Hardwood Plywood comes from the Hardwood Plywood and Veneer Association (HPVA). Grade AA is the best face grade available, denoting unparalleled visual and structural quality. Grade AA veneer is matched for the highest consistency of grain pattern and color, displaying the very best a species and cut has to offer. Ideal for high-end applications such as architectural paneling, doors and cabinets.
Grading Hardwood Plywood is inherently a subjective and difficult process, as although the standard gives rules for specific numbers of defects, there is always personal or operational bias when it comes to the overall appearance of a particular surface. From one grade to the next, not only does variation in appearance get wider, but the amount of overlap between the low end of one grade and the higher end of the next grade down gets wider as well. Because of the inherent individuality of each tree and species, consideration should be given to the overall appearance of the veneer face to determine the appropriate grade for that veneer.
Please consult with your Sales or Specifications Representative, as we can help you determine what is acceptable to you for color, flitch size, size and amount of pin knots, rough grain or other defects in order to get you the product that works best for your applications.
Sustainability:
American Black Walnut trees are native to North America and are dispersed throughout the Eastern half of the continent with the largest concentration found in Ohio and Missouri. Representing only 1% of all standing hardwood timber, Walnut is the least available hardwood. Harvest rates versus growth rates based on US Forest Service census numbers show that 60% more Walnut is growing annually than is being harvested. Walnut is considered sustainable although not as abundant as many other woods.
We recognize the importance of ethically harvested lumber. As our most valuable resource, sustainably harvested forests increase the rate of carbon sequestration and significantly cut carbon emissions. Wood is a renewable and sustainable material for the built environment, requiring less energy than alternatives like concrete or steel. From harvesting to recycling, lumber is the most carbon-efficient choice for building materials. Wood is of the few elements that can increase sustainability in a building’s life cycle, reduce waste, and create positive biophilic health benefits. Increasingly, architects and designers are calling for a return to wood as the prominent basic building material.
As an early adopter of FSC®, we recognize the importance of sustainably harvested lumber. FSC® Certified lumber is available upon request. Contact your Sales or Specifications Representative for more information.
