Benefits of Quartersawn Lumber:
Quarter Sawn lumber yields straight grained, generally narrow boards with fleck or figure which runs across the board. Quarter Sawn Sapele is especially renowned for its beautifully linear ribbon figure. This cut produces a smooth surface which is less prone to surface checking. Expanding and contracting across its thickness rather than width, Quarter Sawn Sapele is exceptionally dimensionally stable.
Lumber is a living product, responding to its environment as a tree does to its forest. Humidity, age, area and cut will slightly alter the appearance of the lumber product. The product images on this page are a sample of this species, not an exact depiction of the product you will receive.

Specifications
Prime Grade Lumber:
Using the National Hardwood Lumber Association (NHLA) Grading standard, Prime Lumber is a premium grade. Developed for the European export market, Prime captures grades within the Select and Better and FAS 1Face and better grades and ensures only the very best production, drying and packaging standards are used to meet the demands of that market.
Prime Quartered Sapele includes a range of boards with minimum yield of 83 and 1/3% clear-wood cuttings on the best face. It allows boards 4” and wider before kiln drying by 6’ and longer.
Please consult with your Sales or Specifications Representative to guarantee you receive the product that best meets your requirements.
Color/Appearance:
Sapele is known for its beautiful golden dark brown heartwood. This rich color is imbued with gorgeous figure and tints of red. Its unique figure will add striking visual interest to any application. Sapele is selected for its rich heartwood, making the white sapwood rarely seen in lumber. Sapele typically has a straight to wavy grain with firm texture and high luster. Quartered Sapele is an elegant and sophisticated choice for woodworkers and designers.
Workability:
Sapele glues, stains and finishes well. Shrinkage and swelling are minimized on account of its dimensional stability and hardness. When exposed to water, Sapele resists warping and shrinking well. It takes nails, screws and glues well. Sapele can be polished to a very high luster. However, planing and routing can be difficult due to its interlocked grain and some woodworkers report a slight blunting effect on cutters. Sapele is very durable with good natural resistance to rot and decay. As a highly stable wood, it has low volumetric and tangential shrinkage.
Sustainability:
Primarily harvested throughout West and Central Africa, Sapele is a species used throughout the world. Complying with the U.S. Lacey Act, our Sapele is sustainably harvested from ethically managed forests. Sapele is sourced from reputable and established suppliers.
We recognize the importance of ethically harvested lumber. As our most valuable resource, sustainably harvested forests increase the rate of carbon sequestration and significantly cut carbon emissions. Wood is a renewable and sustainable material for the built environment, requiring less energy than alternatives like concrete or steel. From harvesting to recycling, lumber is the most carbon-efficient choice for building materials. Wood is of the few elements that can increase sustainability in a building’s life cycle, reduce waste, and create positive biophilic health benefits. Increasingly, architects and designers are calling for a return to wood as the prominent basic building material.
As an early adopter of FSC®, we recognize the importance of sustainably harvested lumber. FSC® Certified lumber is available upon request. Contact your Sales or Specifications Representative for more information.
