  • Stable and uniform
  • Accepts paint, stains and adhesives well
  • Flexible and molds well
  • Easily machinable and workable
  • Ideal for cabinetry

Plain Sawn Lumber:

Cutting tangentially through the tree’s growth rings, Plain Sawn Poplar creates the highest yield of cuts per log while minimizing waste. The result is a grain that displays the very traditional cathedral pattern.

Lumber is a living product, responding to its environment as a tree does to its forest. Humidity, age, area and cut will slightly alter the appearance of the lumber product. The product images on this page are a sample of this species, not an exact depiction of the product you will receive.

Specifications

#1 Common Grade Lumber:

#1 Common grade is often referred to as the Cabinet Makers Grade because of its adaptability to the standard sizes of kitchen cabinet doors used throughout North America. #1 Common is widely used in the manufacture of furniture parts as well.

#1 Common grade includes boards that are a minimum of 3” wide before kiln drying and 4’ long and will yield a minimum clear face cuttings from 66 2/3% (8/12ths). The smallest clear cuttings allowed in this grade are 3” by 3’ and 4” by 2’. The number of these clear cuttings is determined by the size of the board. Both faces of the board must meet the minimum requirement for #1 Common.

Please consult with your Sales or Specifications Representative to guarantee you receive the product that best meets your requirements.

Color/Appearance:

Poplar has a grayish, creamy white sapwood with heartwood that can range from celery green to dark purple. The amount of mineral streaking and purple heartwood varies by growing regions and environmental conditions. Some producers will control this by separating a “color no defect” product. It has a medium to fine, uniform texture and a straight grain with exceptional smoothness.

Workability:

Poplar is easily machinable. It is physically stable and suitable for applications like mouldings. Its softness can result in difficulty when sanding. Poplar takes finishes well and is widely desired for paint applications. Poplar has a high bending strength and high density. While it is one of the softest hardwoods, it still outperforms most softwoods.

Sustainability:

American Yellow Poplar is abundant in the Appalachian Mountain region of the US. In the United States, Poplar is the fourth most abundant hardwood species, representing 8% of standing hardwood timber. Harvest rates versus growth rates based on data from the US Forest Service show that 63% more Poplar is growing annually than is being harvested. Poplar is a sustainably harvested domestic hardwood which grows exceptionally fast.

We recognize the importance of ethically harvested lumber. As our most valuable resource, sustainably harvested forests increase the rate of carbon sequestration and significantly cut carbon emissions. Wood is a renewable and sustainable material for the built environment, requiring less energy than alternatives like concrete or steel. From harvesting to recycling, lumber is the most carbon-efficient choice for building materials. Wood is of the few elements that can increase sustainability in a building’s life cycle, reduce waste, and create positive biophilic health benefits. Increasingly, architects and designers are calling for a return to wood as the prominent basic building material.

As an early adopter of FSC®, we recognize the importance of sustainably harvested lumber. FSC® Certified lumber is available upon request. Contact your Sales or Specifications Representative for more information.
