Plain Sawn:

Cutting tangentially through the tree’s growth rings, Plain Sawn Pacific Coast Maple utilizes the entire log while minimizing waste. The result is a grain pattern that displays a very traditional and recognizable cathedral pattern.

Lumber is a living product, responding to its environment as a tree does to its forest. Humidity, age, area and cut will slightly alter the appearance of the lumber product. The product images on this page are a sample of this species, not an exact depiction of the product you will receive.

Color/Appearance:

Pacific Coast Maple is the Soft Maple of Western North America. It has beautiful light sapwood, ranging from pinkish white to soft yellow and khaki, contrasted with light brown sapwood. Soft Maple is renowned for its uniform color, tight grain and fine texture. The growth rings of Soft Maple are light brown, forming familiar and subtle cathedrals when plain sawn. Sturdy and reliable, Soft Maple continues to be a bright and elegant choice for cabinetry and furniture.

Workability:

Pacific Coast Maple is somewhat workable, producing good results with both hand and machine tools. Soft Maple glues easily and takes staining very well. While called soft, Soft Maple is still quite dense compared to other hardwoods, making it a highly versatile species. Pacific Coast Maple is slightly harder than Eastern Soft Maple. For projects that require durable materials while accounting for stains, paints or adhesives, Pacific Coast Maple is an excellent choice.

Sustainability:

Domestically harvested throughout Western North America, Pacific Coast Maple is sustainably and ethically grown. It is one of the few commercial hardwood species in the Western region and the only Maple harvested industrially on the West Coast.

We recognize the importance of ethically harvested lumber. As our most valuable resource, sustainably harvested forests increase the rate of carbon sequestration and significantly cut carbon emissions. Wood is a renewable and sustainable material for the built environment, requiring less energy than alternatives like concrete or steel. From harvesting to recycling, lumber is the most carbon-efficient choice for building materials. Wood is of the few elements that can increase sustainability in a building’s life cycle, reduce waste, and create positive biophilic health benefits. Increasingly, architects and designers are calling for a return to wood as the prominent basic building material.

As an early adopter of FSC®, we recognize the importance of sustainably harvested lumber. FSC® Certified lumber is available upon request. Contact your Sales or Specifications Representative for more information.
