Plain Sawn:
Cutting tangentially through the tree’s growth rings, Plain Sawn Hickory utilizes the entire log while minimizing waste. The result is a grain pattern that displays a very traditional and recognizable cathedral pattern.
Lumber is a living product, responding to its environment as a tree does to its forest. Humidity, age, area and cut will slightly alter the appearance of the lumber product. The product images on this page are a sample of this species, not an exact depiction of the product you will receive.

Specifications
Rustic Grade:
The National Hardwoods Lumber Association (NHLA) does not publish any guidelines for “Rustic” grade, making it dependent on individual sawmills and their own production processes. The characteristics present on an individual board is subjective to the agreement between buyer and seller. Rustic Grade boards generally come 4” and wider before kiln drying by 4’ and longer.
Rustic grade is designed to provide unique character with all its natural defects present. There is no limit on the number of knots, pin knots, bird peck, and mineral streaks. while ensuring that the board is sound. There are often limits on the volume and soundness of pith. These “defects” are all desired in this grade. Rustic is widely used in cabinetry and flooring applications.
Please consult with your Sales or Specifications Representative to guarantee you receive the product that best meets your requirements.
Brown Color/Appearance:
Brown Hickory is specifically selected to include only heartwood, resulting in a soft reddish-brown hue. Hickory possesses a lightly colored and straight grain. Hickory can be easily stained and finished, darkening the brown hue and making it a good choice for imitating more expensive hardwood varieties.
Workability:
An extremely dense hardwood, Hickory’s stiffness can make it difficult to work. Because of its hardness, when machined it can blunt cutting edges and can lead to tear-out. Reducing feed rate or taking light cuts while machining can help to reduce tear-out. It takes glue and stain well and responds nicely to steam bending. It is a stable wood with low volumetric and tangential shrinkage.
Sustainability:
Hickory is native to North America and is widely dispersed throughout the East. In the United States, it is the sixth most common hardwood species, representing 5% of standing hardwood timber. Harvest rates versus growth rates based on data from the US Forest Service show that 59% more Hickory grows annually than is harvested. Sourced responsibly and sustainably, Hickory is a common species.
We recognize the importance of ethically harvested lumber. As our most valuable resource, sustainably harvested forests increase the rate of carbon sequestration and significantly cut carbon emissions. Wood is a renewable and sustainable material for the built environment, requiring less energy than alternatives like concrete or steel. From harvesting to recycling, lumber is the most carbon-efficient choice for building materials. Wood is of the few elements that can increase sustainability in a building’s life cycle, reduce waste, and create positive biophilic health benefits. Increasingly, architects and designers are calling for a return to wood as the prominent basic building material.
As an early adopter of FSC®, we recognize the importance of sustainably harvested lumber. FSC® Certified lumber is available upon request. Contact your Sales or Specifications Representative for more information.
