Calico Hickory is the perfect mixture of durability and aesthetic appeal. Its captivating mix of reddish-brown heartwood and white sapwood creates a striking and multi-dimensional surface. Plain Sawn:

Cutting tangentially through the tree’s growth rings, Plain Sawn Hickory utilizes the entire log while minimizing waste. The result is a grain pattern that displays a very traditional and recognizable cathedral pattern.

Prime Grade Lumber:

Using the National Hardwood Lumber Association (NHLA) Grading standard, Prime Lumber is a premium grade. Developed for the European export market, Prime captures grades within the Select and Better and FAS 1 Face and Better Grades and ensures only the very best production, drying and packaging standards are used to meet the demands of that market.

Prime Hickory is designed to meet a minimum yield of 83 1/3% (10/12ths) clear-wood cuttings on the best face. Allowed widths start at 6” and wider before kiln drying with lengths 7’ and longer.

Calico Color/Appearance:

Unlike unselected lumber, which allows for all heartwood or sapwood, Calico Hickory includes specifically selected boards with a mixture of both sap and heart. The resulting boards display a dramatic, variegated blend of white and brown.

Workability:

An extremely dense hardwood, Hickory’s stiffness can make it difficult to work. Because of its hardness, when machined it can blunt cutting edges and can lead to tear-out. Reducing feed rate or taking light cuts while machining can help to reduce tear-out. It takes glue and stain well and responds nicely to steam bending. It is a stable wood with low volumetric and tangential shrinkage.

Sustainability:

Hickory is native to North America and is widely dispersed throughout the East. In the United States, it is the sixth most common hardwood species, representing 5% of standing hardwood timber. Harvest rates versus growth rates based on data from the US Forest Service show that 59% more Hickory grows annually than is harvested. Sourced responsibly and sustainably, Hickory is a common species.

Wood is a renewable and sustainable material for the built environment, requiring less energy than alternatives like concrete or steel. Increasingly, architects and designers are calling for a return to wood as the prominent basic building material.
