Hardwood Plywood and, by extension, Wood Veneer Edgebanding, is defined by the types of slicing, matching, and grade of the wood product. With various methods of slicing and matching, veneers can be customized to each wood species and project, resulting in multiple exceptional options to make any project uniquely artful.

Plain Sliced:

Plain Sliced veneer is produced by cutting roughly parallel to the center of the log, tangentially to the growth rings. Generally, Plain Slicing produces a consistent appearance for each sheet, and creates a cathedral grain pattern on the surface.

Book Matched:

Alder comes Book Matched, a method in which every other leaf or component of veneer from a log is turned over to produce its mirror image at the joint. Like turning the pages of a book, this matching method produces an aesthetically pleasing appearance across the face.

Why Alder?

  • Can be finished and stained to appear as other hardwood species
  • Uniform, small pore structure
  • Glues, stains and polishes well
  • Machines well
  • Evenly textured
  • Abundant and readily available

Hardwood products are made from beautiful hardwood, designed to showcase the stunning figure and allure of wood. Often stained or finished, these thin sheets are assembled using an engineered core—from veneer core, particleboard, to medium density fiberboard.

Contact your Sales or Specifications Representative for further information on specific color and character varieties available and best suited for your project.

Please consult with your Sales or Specifications Representative, as we can help you determine what is acceptable to you for color, flitch size, size and amount of pin knots, rough grain or other defects in order to get you the product that works best for your applications.

Fabrication

Wood Veneer Edgebanding is manufactured through an exacting process in which individual pieces of veneer are joined into a continuous roll by finger-jointing the veneer. This inflection point between different pieces of veneer is glued together and joined with a die cut finger layout and is color and grain matched by flipping every other piece of veneer.

The Veneer is then laminated to a color-matched fleece cellulous membrane to ensure the durability of the edgebanding. The edgebanding is offered non-glued, pre-glued, or prefinished.

Sustainability:

Alder is the most abundant hardwood in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States and is commercially very accessible. It has been used for furniture, cabinetry and turned products for centuries. Alder trees are naturally smaller than many other hardwood trees, and thus widths and lengths available may be limited. Often used as an alternative to Black Cherry, Alder is easily grown, sustainably harvested domestic hardwood.

We recognize the importance of ethically harvested lumber. As our most valuable resource, sustainably harvested forests increase the rate of carbon sequestration and significantly cut carbon emissions. Wood is a renewable and sustainable material for the built environment, requiring less energy than alternatives like concrete or steel. From harvesting to recycling, lumber is the most carbon-efficient choice for building materials. Wood is of the few elements that can increase sustainability in a building’s life cycle, reduce waste, and create positive biophilic health benefits. Increasingly, architects and designers are calling for a return to wood as the prominent basic building material.

As an early adopter of FSC®, we recognize the importance of sustainably harvested lumber. FSC® Certified lumber is available upon request. Contact your Sales or Specifications Representative for more information.
