Used extensively for veneer and plywood, millwork, guitars, furniture and cabinetry, Alder is a versatile domestic hardwood. As one of the most common species available in the United States, particularly the Pacific Northwest, Alder is an important and readily available species. Its ease of workability and ready acceptance of glues, stains and polish make it an excellent choice for interior projects.
Why K-Strip Alder?
- Appealing organic character
- Ideal for narrow applications
- Great structural stability
- Easy to work and machine
- Domestically harvested and sustainably processed
Plain Sawn Alder:
Cutting tangentially through the tree’s growth rings, Plain Sawn Alder utilizes the entire log while minimizing waste. The result is a grain pattern that displays a very traditional and recognizable cathedral pattern.
Lumber is a living product, responding to its environment as a tree does to its forest. Humidity, age, area and cut will slightly alter the appearance of the lumber product. The product images on this page are a sample of this species, not an exact depiction of the product you will receive.

Color/Appearance:
Alder is a lightly colored and neutral hardwood, ranging from light, sandy tones to reddish brown. The grain is uniform and straight and is generally faint. The color darkens with age, and its light tone lends well to staining and finishing, often taking on a honey tone or matching the look of a more expensive species. Alder has consistent coloring throughout the tree, with very little distinction between heartwood and sapwood.
Workability:
Easily worked with both hand and machine tools, Alder is a relatively soft hardwood that glues, paints and stains with ease. Alder has smooth texture with a relatively uniform and straight grain. This lightly colored hardwood is versatile, used for furniture, millwork, doorframes and can be stained to match the appearance of more expensive species.
Sustainability:
Alder is the most common ardwood in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States and is commercially very accessible. It has been used for furniture, cabinetry and turned products for centuries. Alder trees are naturally smaller than many other hardwood trees, and thus widths and lengths available may be limited. Often used as an alternative to Black Cherry, Alder is easily grown, sustainably harvested domestic hardwood.
We recognize the importance of ethically harvested lumber. As our most valuable resource, sustainably harvested forests increase the rate of carbon sequestration and significantly cut carbon emissions. Wood is a renewable and sustainable material for the built environment, requiring less energy than alternatives like concrete or steel. From harvesting to recycling, lumber is the most carbon-efficient choice for building materials. Wood is of the few elements that can increase sustainability in a building’s life cycle, reduce waste, and create positive biophilic health benefits. Increasingly, architects and designers are calling for a return to wood as the prominent basic building material.
As an early adopter of FSC®, we recognize the importance of sustainably harvested lumber. FSC® Certified lumber is available upon request. Contact your Sales or Specifications Representative for more information.
